![]() Not convinced.? Then look up "Heartbound" and the story behind it. In fact, has anyone even tried to ask him for his opinion about this, or did we just jump directly to the crucifixion part.? More importantly, what is the opinion of Cuphead's creator about this.? Because what we all bunch of randoms with pitchforks say is completely pointless compared to his opinion on this matter. So we’re trying to turn our attention more towards all those who are supporting us and sending their love for the game. That being said, along with all those negative responses, a lot of people have also reached out to us to say they adore the game and they would love to see it succeed. We were prepared for some backlash, but the trailer definitely reached way more people than we could ever anticipate, and all the hate and negativity coming our way has definitely had a huge impact on us. We’re both avid fans and we wanted to make something similar, but always from a place of respect and admiration for the original. They said: Yes, of course Cuphead was a huge inspiration for Enchanted Portals. The following day, speaking to Polygon, two people from Xixo, the studio behind Enchanted Portals, defended the game. The post received more than 180,000 views in 24 hours (shown below). That day, YouTuber Jim Sterling published a review of the trailer, calling Enchanted Portals a "brazen" rip-off of Cuphead. Fine line between inspiration and ripoff." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 2,000 likes and 400 retweets (shown below, right). It literally looks like they're trying to cash in on both look and gameplay of the pre-existing Cuphead, and that's not great. wrote, "Look I wanna give Enchanted Portals the benefit of the doubt but… I can't, either can most of the community. Twitter user shared a message from the developers of Enchanted Portals stating that they were inspired by Cuphead. BOYYYY if this isn't borderline plagiarism…" The tweet recieved more than 3,300 likes and 720 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, center). They captioned the images, "Enchanted Portals: Can I copy your homework? / Cuphead: Sure just make it look different so it doesn't look like you just copied it / Enchanted Portals: Sure thing. The following day, Twitter user tweeted a series of side-by-side images from the two games. For example, Twitte user tweeted an image an interface message from the game Fallout that reads, "You've been caught pickpocketing" (shown below, left). It's no The Last Hope-tier mockbuster, so why has it always been treated like it is? Even if the game's not great, the effort and passion behind it is clearly on display.Following the release of the trailer, many reacted negative to what they recognized as similarities to Cuphead. Nothing groundbreaking and often frustrating, but not on the level of an entirely bad game. So Enchanted Portals is pretty much the definition of a mid-tier indie game. Ironically, if Enchanted Portals was more like Cuphead and cut most of its run-and-gun stages (especially the matrix level), it'd be greatly improved. They could do with being just a bit more exciting, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having fun. It's a basic game of moving away from falling tiles whilst a disco beat played, but I enjoyed the goofy animations and reprieve from a hectic first phase (not to mention how said beat is now stuck in my head). Boss 2 is particularly good with this, introducing a short non-combat snippet to the fight, as a cow DJs on a space station, while a couple of his disco-dancing pals flank him on either side. Not only do they not outstay their welcome like the run-and-gun parts, but they actually keep things fresh throughout. Sure, it's undoubtedly derivative, but is that really such a bad thing? I mean, I just reviewed a Bloodborne-derivative game, and really enjoyed it! When it's not something that could be called a mockbuster (I don't think anyone in the market for Cuphead will get the two mixed up), the rage around the title's seems overblown. ![]() In fairness, the game has a lot of rough spots-from a lack of invincibility frames after getting hit to some poor level design-but it has its better moments too. Well, after four years Xixo Games Studios has finally released Enchanted Portals, and the press has been, well, pretty bad. Not only does the game carry a more-or-less similar rubberhose cartoon style to Cuphead but this first trailer featured nothing but bosses fought in the exact same way as Cuphead's. Being such a runaway hit, there were bound to be imitators sooner or later, chief among them Enchanted Portals, an indie title that had viewers up in arms with its 2019 trailer. Cuphead is one of my favorite games of all time, paying homage to a cartoon style I love whilst being a damn good game on top of it.
